Lithgow Small Arms Factory

Lithgow Small Arms Factory

The Lithgow Small Arms Factory first opened on 8th June 1912. It was created by the Australian Government to ease our reliance on Britain for supply of defence materials.

The factory manufactured rifles and bayonets during the World War 1, and during World War 2 manufacturing was increased to include Vickers machine guns and Bren guns. Following WW2, the factory continued to manufacture weapons for the defence force, but also delved into sporting goods and sewing machines at one time.

Austimber have managed to procure much of the timber from the decommissioning of the old factory which measured some 80 metres in length and was approx. 20 metres wide. We have numerous old roof trusses available that span in excess of 6m and, timber purlins, posts and wall framing, all in recycled Monterey Pine.

Govetts Leap Walking Trail

Govetts Leap Walking Trail

During catastrophic bushfires throughout the Blue Mountains west of Sydney in recent years, much of NSW-NP&WS infrastructure has been badly damaged, and in many cases, requiring total replacement. One such location was Govetts Leap Lookout and Walking Trail at Blackheath.
Austimber have been supplying various NSW-NP&WS works for a number of years, and once again we were called to supply the ex. 150 x 50 Ironbark decking, pre-cut to length, pencil rounded on ends as well as longitudinal corners, pre-oiled and ready to lay for this project as well.
Austimber have also been used to supply several ‘Parks Victoria’ projects also.

Austimber Team Up With ADCO

Austimber Team Up With ADCO

Austimber recently manufactured for ADCO Constructions new head office in Melbourne a curved timber brick screen wall that has become the centre-piece of their office.

Not only did we supply, but AusTimber provided consultation , assembly advice, docking ,drilling & final coating of the bricks offsite as well all fixing materials, enabling fast assembly and a superior finish of a stable and rigid screen wall.

The architects on this project – Woods Bagot are well known to Austimber as we have previously supplied a number of other projects around Australia in the past.

We have also had prior experience with block screen walls including a similar project completed several years ago at the Castle Hill RSL “Rib Factory” restaurant in NSW.

If you can design it … Austimber can make it!

Great Ocean Walk Trail Head

Great Ocean Walk Trail Head

Austimber worked with the landscape architects (TBLD) and Parks Victoria to select timber species and decking profiles prior to tendering for construction.

Austimber did a take-off of required lengths, cut all timber to length for minimum waste and then kiln dried the Grey Ironbark months in advance to it being required on site.

Once the contract was let, we also liaised with the construction contractor to double check all measurements.

Timber was the machined fresh only the week before needed on site!

All timber was then packed and labelled for each different deck section, sub-deck, etc. and delivered direct from our Box Hill (Sydney) yard to Apollo Bay ready for immediate installation  –  keeping both, site damage and handling on site to a minimum.
