Turpentine derives its name from the odour of the oleo-resin under the bark layers but ironically, is one of the most difficult Australian timbers to burn. It grows along the east coast from Sydney to Cairns. The heartwood is reddish-brown.
Suitable for decking, cladding and flooring, Turpentine is also considered as one of the best timbers for marine (saltwater) immersion due to the extractives present in the wood protecting it against Toledo (Marine) Borer, the presence of silica also has a tendency to blunt tools quickly.
