Other common names for this timber are:- Surian, Kalantas (or Calantas).
While sharing some properties and its name with the probably more commonly known ‘Western Red Cedar’ (which comes from British Columbia), this is quite a different timber (growing across the Australasian region).
‘Australian Cedar’(Toona Australis)was used quite extensively in the early days for joinery, boat-building and furniture manufacture and many of the furniture items found in antique stores today were made from this timber, However, as it is no longer harvested on the Australian mainland and we now must obtain this almost identical timber from the Philippines.
